The LEGO Blog Post

LEGOs are kind of like the top of the food chain when it comes to toys. And LEGOs aren’t just for kids - they are an increasingly popular stress relief mechanism or just plain source of fun for many adults. LEGOs are versatile, to say the least - the options for what you can build are literally endless. But they’re also structured, almost meditatively so, especially if you’re building a 1000-piece plus kit.

Where it can get kind of confusing: there is also a whole constellation of media - books, movies, characters, crossovers amongst fictional universes - established in the LEGO world. If you have little familiarity with this world, navigating the characters and keeping track of what’s current and what’s vintage can be confusing.

That’s why we’ve put together this little guide of some of the characters and character groups you’re most likely to encounter if you have a child in your life who is into LEGOs. You’re welcome!

The LEGO Movie

If you haven’t seen The LEGO Movie or its sequel The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (yes, seriously), you probably don’t know who Emmett and his friends are. We’ll explain it simply: The LEGO Movie is basically what would happen if LEGO mini figures came to life and lived an ordinary existence…until they started living like superheroes and villains.

Nexo Knights

LEGO Nexo Knights might be the least famous LEGO character set, maybe because the cartoon series was cancelled before completing a planned final season. You don’t really need to watch the show to enjoy Nexo Knights - the LEGO sets themselves are awesome enough, and can be easily used alongside your child’s other LEGO characters.

LEGO Ninjago

LEGO Ninjago is one of those media engines that’s just as fun for adults as it is for kids. The main characters of Ninjago are both male and female, human and AI. They use “spinjitsu” to fight crime, and special tools and costumes that change depending on what season of the show it is. The Ninjago characters are relatable, and the jokes are there for the adults.

LEGO Star Wars

What’s the difference between LEGO Star Wars and regular Star Wars? Well…there isn’t one. LEGO Star Wars just means all of the LEGO sets that license the Star Wars characters and movie scenes to create very expensive, very complicated, very limited edition sets that go on into infinity. May the force be with you.

LEGO Batman

We know what you’re thinking…if there’s no difference between LEGO Star Wars and regular Star Wars, then there must not be a difference between LEGO Batman and regular Batman. Well, that’s where things get a little confusing. LEGO Batman is, in fact, an actual separate character, with his own movie and universe. Besides being more square than regular Batman, LEGO Batman tells a lot of hilarious jokes making fun of the original Batman (in a way that pays homage, of course).
