Family Costumes for Halloween - Consider A Group Theme

It’s a difficult task to come up with ideas for yourself when it comes to costumes, much less come up with Halloween costumes for your entire family. Opinions can often differ and taste will always be an issue. Your youngest child might not jive with a Dracula costume anymore.

Instead, one path worth considering is a group theme this Halloween. You can look toward package deals and conceptualize your Halloween costume ideas as a group.

Think TV and Movies

One of the more obvious examples of family costumes for Halloween is The Addams Family. You’ve likely seen celebrity families dressing up as Morticia, Gomez, and especially Uncle Fester. Families will often get style points for dressing their baby or toddler as Uncle Fester, by the way.

You can also dress as The Brady Bunch, although this idea might be a little outdated and there don’t seem to be any Brady Bunch reboot rumors kicking around Hollywood at the moment.

Superhero Costumes are quite popular these days, for children and adults as a matter of fact. Dressing the kids up in a Spiderman Costume, a Wonder Woman Costume, or even a Harry Potter Costume will likely get style points with the kids, as long as you’re okay with either dressing in spandex or having to settle on Gryffindor or Slytherin (yes, that’s a Harry Potter reference).

Cartoon Characters

If you have any number of young ones in your family, going the cartoon character route will get your kids excited about their Halloween costumes. You can dress up in contemporary cartoon costumes by paying attention to your kid’s favorite shows. Or you can bring your children into your own interests and go with a classic cartoon, such as Scooby Doo.

It might be a harder sell, but The Simpsons is still on air and has been enjoyed for generations by now. You can dress your family up as your favorite characters from Springfield, no matter how obscure you decide to go.

Going the More Traditional Route

If you’re hard-pressed coming up with ideas that incorporate that certain wow factor, it might just be a good idea to go with a traditional costume and just make sure to put as much effort into your family’s costumes as possible.

More traditional costumes might include going with the classic Pirate Costume, or dressing your family up like a circus family complete with ringmaster, acrobats, and maybe even the baby or toddler dressed as the lion, tiger, or bear.

Dressing your family up as hippies might be another simple idea that you can pull off in a creative and even elegant way. You might have to find some wigs and some bell bottoms, but this shouldn’t be too hard of a task, especially if you know where to go online or have a good thrift store in your neck of the woods.

Last Minute Family Costume Ideas

If you find yourself lacking in the inspiration department and Halloween season is upon you, you might have to make an executive decision and figure out how to get the rest of the family onboard.

As a last resort, you can dress up as food items that go together, like peanut butter and jelly, a fruit salad, or maybe even a favorite cultural dish. You might have to break out some cardboard and hit up the craft store, but you’d be surprised how enjoyable it can be to come up with a family-themed Halloween costume on the fly together.
