When it comes to kids, sometimes it doesn’t make much sense to go out and buy brand new Kids Halloween Costumes only to have them not fit the following year. Sure, it’s not like many of us wear Halloween costumes more than a few times a year, but it particularly stings to have something rendered as useless only one year after purchasing.

Just like you might look for budget-friendly ways to purchase clothing for your children during growth spurts, it might make sense to go the DIY route when it comes to Halloween Costumes for Kids.

Below, we go over a few ideas to get you started, this way you have plenty of inspiration leading up to Halloween season this year.

Take A Look Around the House

If you’re going to go the do it yourself route for your kid’s Halloween costume, it’s probably likely that you’re not going to be able to pull together a Harley Quinn Costume or a Spiderman Costume. If you have a robe lying around the house and spring for a cheap stooge wig, you can whip up a Harry Potter Costume without breaking the bank.

You can do a lot with an old white sheet, whether you decide to dress your child up as a ghost or a Greek deity. Getting creative and incorporating stuff you already have might even help you declutter your home in a small way.

Get Crafty

Thinking outside the box might be a requirement when going the DIY path to costume creation. Cardboard might prove to be a valuable commodity. You can cut patterns out of old moving boxes, maybe even cut and paint a large piece of cardboard to look like your child’s favorite emoji (or yours).

You can also keep a cardboard box and dress your child up like a kitten while securing tiny stuffed animal kittens along the edges of the box. You can use a pair of old suspenders to secure the on your child’s shoulders, resulting in what might just be crowd pleaser – the old kitties in a box costume.

Go the Classic Route

Making a Dracula costume is going to be a lot easier than trying to throw together a Yoda costume, although creative individuals who know their way around a fabric, artists, or crafts store will find a way to pull any costume off and make it look easy.

Choosing a more classic costume, like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, etc. will make your job slightly easier than trying to go with Superhero Costumes. If your child is game and doesn’t have strong opinions about what they should be for Halloween, you can dress them up as a throwback to your own childhood.

One costume that is incredibly easy to put together is Magnum, P.I., for instance. All you have to do is find a child’s Hawaiian shirt, a baseball cap, and draw on a Burt Reynolds-style mustache. Of course, your child probably won’t know who this classic television character is, but it will likely be a big hit with all of the adults.

Thrift it Up

One really good way to save money is to make intelligent purchases when it comes to your child’s Halloween costume. Head to your local thrift store for some great deals, whether you have an idea or not. Even if you don’t have a clue what you’re dressing your child up as for Halloween, you might find the perfect ensemble that jumpstarts your creativity.
